Education & Credentials

2016-2017

Subspecialty Fellowship in Implant Dentistry

University of Bern

Bern, Switzerland

Dr. Afra was awarded the International Team for Implantology (ITI) Scholarship, training for one full year at the world-renowned “cathedral of implant dentistry” under Prof. Urs Belser, Prof. Daniel Buser, and Prof. Urs Brägger.

This prestigious program refined his skills in advanced bone grafting, digital implant planning, and the creation of natural-looking, long-lasting restorations. He also completed multiple specialised ITI and European master courses, ensuring his patients benefit from the same precision and excellence that define Swiss dentistry.

2013-2015

MSc in Dental Restorative Science

McGill University

Montreal, Canada

After years in general practice, Dr. Afra returned to Montreal, his birthplace, and joined one of the most respected dental schools in North America. His research focused on evidence-based protocols for deciding when posterior teeth should be restored with direct fillings versus indirect crowns, balancing preservation of natural tooth structure with strength, longevity, and function.

Under the mentorship of Dr. F. Tamimi (main supervisor), Dr. Samer Abi-Nader (co-supervisor), Dr. S. Esfandiari, and Prof. Jocelyne Feine, he refined the clinical judgement, precision, and patient-first ethos that underpin his practice. This work, now widely cited, continues to inform restorative decisions for dentists internationally.

2016-2018

Doctorate in Reconstructive Implant Dentistry

University of Bern

Bern, Switzerland

Dr. Afra, mentored by the legendary Prof. Urs Brägger, collaborated with Prof. Kensuke Igarashi (Nippon University, Japan) on research advancing implant–prosthodontic science.

His doctoral work developed protocols to protect implant integrity, including diagnostic methods to assess and preserve precision fits after mechanical failure. He co-created surgical–prosthetic repair strategies for cases once deemed irretrievable, influencing how leading clinics address complex complications.

His research also set reference standards for measuring peri-implant bone stability, now reflected in specialist guidelines. This blend of technical mastery, biomechanical insight, and restorative artistry underpins his uncompromising standard of care across continents.
